When Your Life Looks Good on Paper... But Something Still Feels Missing
Jul 01, 2026
There’s something I’ve noticed over the years, and it usually comes up in the quietest conversations.
Not the conversations where someone is pouring their heart out because life is falling apart. Quite the opposite, actually. It tends to come up when someone sighs, looks down at their coffee and says, "I don't even know why I'm feeling like this."
They'll often go on to tell me that life is good.
Their family is okay. Work is okay. They've got a roof over their head, food on the table and, by most people's standards, not much to complain about. Then almost immediately they'll follow it up with, "I know I should just be grateful."
That sentence always makes me pause.
Not because gratitude isn't important. It absolutely is. But somewhere along the way, I think we've unintentionally taught ourselves that gratitude means we're no longer allowed to want anything more from life.
As though feeling a quiet longing somehow cancels out everything we're thankful for.
I don't believe that's true.
I think it's entirely possible to love the life you've built and still feel that little nudge inside you saying, "There's another chapter waiting."
That doesn't make you ungrateful.
It makes you human.
When I look back over my own life, I can see moments where that feeling showed up long before I was ready to acknowledge it. There wasn't anything dramatically wrong. I wasn't running away from my life. There was simply a growing awareness that I'd changed, and perhaps my life needed to grow alongside me.
At first, I ignored it.
I convinced myself it would pass. I stayed busy. I focused on everything and everyone else because that was easier than sitting with the question quietly tapping me on the shoulder.
But the funny thing about those whispers is they rarely disappear.
They wait.
Sometimes for months.
Sometimes for years.
And every now and then they'll gently remind you they're still there when you find yourself daydreaming about a different way of living, a new adventure, a creative project, or simply having more space to breathe.
I've met so many women who mistake that feeling for dissatisfaction. They tell themselves they shouldn't feel this way because they have a good life. But perhaps it's not dissatisfaction at all.
Perhaps it's growth.
After all, you're not the same woman you were ten years ago. The experiences you've had have shaped you. The challenges you've overcome have changed your perspective. The things that once fulfilled you may no longer fit quite as comfortably as they once did.
Isn't that what growth does?
It stretches us beyond the lives we once imagined for ourselves.
I sometimes wonder how different life would look if, instead of feeling guilty for those quiet longings, we simply became curious about them.
Not acting on every one of them. Not turning our lives upside down overnight.
Just listening.
Giving ourselves permission to ask, "Why does this keep coming back to me?"
Maybe it's asking for more adventure. Maybe it's asking for more rest. Maybe it's asking for more creativity, more connection or more joy.
Or maybe it's simply asking you to remember the parts of yourself that have been sitting patiently in the background while you've been taking care of everyone else.
Whatever it is, I don't think it's there to make you feel guilty. I think it's there to help you grow.
So if you've been carrying that quiet feeling lately, please don't rush to push it aside because you think you should be more grateful.
Be grateful.
But also listen.
The two can exist together beautifully.
Sometimes the greatest act of self-kindness isn't making a big change, it's simply acknowledging that your heart has been trying to start a conversation with you.
And perhaps today is the day you finally listen.
Thank you for spending a little time here with me today.
If there's one thing I hope you take away from this, it's that wanting something more doesn't mean there's something wrong with the life you have. It may simply mean you're becoming someone who needs something different.
That's not failure.
That's growth.
Cheering you on, always,
Sandra 💗
